Why Investing in a Mastermind Means Growth for 2019

Mekina Saylor, a Mastermind with Julie Paisley

This year investing in my business means… well, it means a M A S T E R M I N D!

THE 2019 JP MASTERMIND is a 1 year coaching/mastermind program for those who want to grow and transform their business in the company of likeminded creatives!

-Julie Paisley.

Y’all, I could talk business, weddings and photography until I’m blue in the face. I love hearing how people are growing their businesses and the different ideas people have to market themselves, their businesses and everything that goes along with it! Last year I did a lot of listening to podcasts. I tried all different kinds and some even mentioned the sacred “Mastermind” terminology. I really didn’t know what it meant other than a bunch of people that are in similar professions getting together and talking about their businesses. I didn’t comprehend the reward or why anyone would pay to be a part of one. To be completely honest my mind was blown. Like what could a Mastermind possibly do where you would see the return and grow an even more profitable business after investing sometimes thousands, (and yes I said THOUSANDS) of dollars into it. I mean it’s just a bunch of people who apparently end up becoming friends getting together and chatting, I do it every week, so how is this any different?

WHAT IS A MASTERMIND –

A Mastermind is a group of like minded professionals offering a combination of brainstorming, education, peer accountability, and support to sharpen your business and personal skills. This group helps you and the members of your group achieve what feels at times impossible. You will challenge each other to set realistic goals and make plans to accomplish them without feeling alone.

WHAT MASTERMIND DID I JOIN?

Starting Monday I officially begin my Mastermind with Julie Paisley.

This was her Mastermind introduction –

Hey YOU! I know you have *BIG* goals for 2019. In fact, you have a prettttty good feeling that you’re going to make all your wild ideas come true. Honestly? I think you’re right. Especially because you’re pondering joining a Mastermind. My personal Mastermind experienced transformed my life & business in so many ways. In the last year alone I….

  • Belong to a community of seasoned girl bosses who are always available to help & brainstorm (priceless).
  • Work less, make more, and have a solid game plan for my business.
  • Doubled my income and am on track to make $600k+ next year!

Julie is our group facilitator/leader  who started and is running the group. She is going to help us all dive deeply into discussions, and work with one another to create success in our own way.

We will be doing 4 retreats – ORLANDO / AUSTIN / NASHVILLE / CHARLESTON and we will be having calls every month we’re not on a retreat.

WHY DID I CHOSE TO DO A MASTERMIND AND WHAT DO I HOPE TO GET OUT OF IT?

I’ll be honest, I’m overwhelmed with the other 60% of my business 99% of the time. I want to continue creating and growing but instead I’ve been feeling stuck and sinking my time and energy behind my computer. Right before I attended the Creative @ Heart conference in November I began hearing about Julie hosting this Mastermind and I was super intrigued. Having heard about Masterminds for some time I was definitely interested in what this particular one might intel.  I am a big believer that God has a plan for us and a story we need to tell. I also believe God puts people in our lives to re-enforce what is in our hearts. My heart is to serve my clients well and build a business I love. My heart is still creating and couldn’t because I was keeping it in a box and saving it for later…. you know, until all my ducks were in a row and they were never quite in a row.

So I reached out to Julie. We talked for an HOUR! I asked her questions up and down and back and forth. I needed to know I was making the right decision, I basically wanted a guarantee. She didn’t give me a guarantee, because what it truly came down to is what I’m willing to do to see my business thrive.

An important piece to this, is I was just finishing with Creative @ Heart. I was flying from Raleigh, where my dad lives and I was at the airport. I thought I would be home in NJ by the time I’d have my call with Julie. Instead my flight was canceled. I ended up going back to my dad’s house and having the call there. It was late, about 10pm. We got off the phone after 11pm and I went downstairs and my dad was still hanging out watching TV. My dad and I are very close and we love chatting business. He also owns his own business, so throughout the years it’s been nice having a sounding board. He asked me what that was all about and at first I was super embarrassed to tell him. I wasn’t embarrassed because I wanted to grow my business but because I thought it looked weak to want other people to help me grow it. I thought it was embarrassing to tell him I was thinking about paying to join a group when if I researched enough I could probably figure how to do the things I wanted to do… maybe… if I have time to research the stuff I wanted to research.

I told him anyway. I told him of the goals I wanted to accomplish and of where I wanted my business to go in the next five years. I told him all about Julie, the Mastermind, what a Mastermind is and what I’m hoping it will be for me. I was totally and completely sure he’d talk me out of doing this. That’s also one of the reasons I wanted to tell him. I wanted the honesty and the reeling back in. So what does he do? He shocks the living tar out of me by saying I should ABSOLUTELY do it! He told me investing in my business with workshops and mentoring is great but with this you are also investing in yourself. To continue to grow, you have to invest in yourself, in your knowledge and education. He challenged me to imagine the worst that could happen from doing this Mastermind. He told me I may not make a penny back I spent and that that was okay because I gained more knowledge . He also said that would be impossible because my heart was in it and when you have passion for something it can never really fail.

Keep in mind when I left for New York 4 days after graduating college to become a nanny… he didn’t have the same reaction. That all worked out though so we’re good! 🙂

When I read the writing on the wall/ Julie’s Mastermind website I knew I needed to make moves and take action.

Anyone who wants to: Grow a team. Grow your income. Launch a course online. Create your own mastermind. Start a podcast. Create an associate team. Start an online shop. Grow your email list. Partner with brands for paid sponsorships. Create more impact.

I may not want to do all of those things and I may not accomplish them all this year but I’m excited for the prospect of building a business I love and loving a business I built.

So, I’m packing my bags and taking off to Orlando on Monday! I’m hoping to story along the way and do Monthly Mastermind updates here. 🙂

I’m going to miss you! Thanks for sharing about this; allowing people into your journey, even if it leaves you somewhat vulnerable. You’re a girl boss getting more boss (no idea how that’s possible!) Also, these pictures are perfection!
